The sequencing never took long, usually around 9-12 hours depending on how long the sequence was. The problem with our stuff was, if you didn’t get everything exactly right, you’d be missing a few nucleotides here and there

Can you clarify what you mean by standard lab equipment? Standard for a facility that sequences genomes is nothing like standard lab equipment in a wet-lab.

Yes … but why limit yourself? Get a real strong degree in IT and concentrate your internship or co-op work in a health-related area. That will target the job market the best.
