    My research is starting to get into proteomics and I’d like a good book with methods and protocols that don’t cost >$100. I’ve got a couple of books from the university library, but they are all a little outdated

    Josip Lovric has an introduction book that runs about $50 but you can find the paperback version for under $30. A lot of people on a few other sites were recommending it. Check it out and let me know if this is what you are after.
