Open Science for Life Research

How it Works

We are moving toward a world in which everything will be measured and anything can be knowable, both in the world around us and within our bodies.

— Exponential Organizations by Salim Ismail

Omics Model of Health

A well established model of health is represented by this equation: Genome*Exposome=Phenome.

We know our life style (Exposome, the things we are exposed to) can create health risks but we believe that we can prevent some if we are better informed about our genetic health risks (Genome and Genotypes) and adapt our life style to fit our genes. The Phenome and phenotypes are the observed outcomes of the interaction between Genome and Exposome, such as an observed disease, a symptom, a physical change such as weight loss, or a mental state like depression or joy. Omics covers all three concepts of the equation: genomics, exposomics, phenomics and subcategories of each, such as metagenomics (Exposome), transcriptomics (Phenome), proteomics (Phenome), metabolomics (both Exposome -secondary metabolites such as drugs and Phenome – Primary metabolites synthesized by human cells).

Omics Blog

The Omics Blog will keep you up-to-date on open science breakthroughs that affect your health and well-being.

Omics Forum

The Omics Forum invites discussions on the best strategies to collect your own health data, analyze and understand it, and later share or sell it to the scientific research community and the pharma industry for new medical discoveries and better, healthier lives for all of us.

Omics Help Desk

Omics Help Desk connects people who have health and fitness data (data owners) with scientists (data analysts) who help them research their data. Data owners hire a data analyst to help them analyze omics data, self-monitoring measurements and observations by submitting the project details and their budget and wait for the candidates.

Data Analysts apply to projects using credits. Besides the free credits given for each registered data analyst, extra credits can be purchased at any time from the data analyst dashboard. Data analysts or data scientists, are vetted on a per-person basis through their affiliation to a university or academic lab and the number of publications they have co-authored in a particular scientific domain. Every data analyst is a legitimate scientist.

Data owners can monitor each new candidate and carefully select the one that best fit each project on their dashboard. From there they can also select the winning candidate and initiate the development terms discussion. As soon as the development terms are agreed the project starts.

Escrow is supported through PayPal meaning that transactions between parties are secured and guaranteed for each party, including the site owners’ fee. This fee is 10% of the project agreed budget.

Two Type of Projects

Project Scope Evaluation

In order to estimate the cost-time investment to fulfill a data analysis project and how to properly describe the analysis project, the data owner should first submit an Effort Evaluation Project to get an estimate of how much time the project will take based on his data sets, metadata, the file formats, and the goal of the study. This type of “consultation” usually requires less than an hour to complete. In some cases, the data owner may be directed to an online DIY tutorial or free software saving him the cost of outsourcing the data analysis.

Data Analysis Project

Once the effort for a project has been assessed the data owner can submit a data analysis project and include adequate datasets and research descriptions she learned during the project scope evaluation to help a data analyst determine if this is a project that matches their skills.
